Exhibition for the blind «Feel the Culture»

Every day, we admire the beauty of the world around us. Sometimes we do not even notice how great our environment is. Unfortunately, there are some persons who, instead of bright colours, the beauty of forms and the gestures of other persons, see only a black veil. In order to integrate blind people into society, Kharkiv Literary Museum opened a unique exhibition for the blind called «Feel the culture, within the context of the «German Weeks» in Kharkiv, on October 20th. This exhibit allowed blind people to get acquainted with the culture and ancient architectural monuments of different countries.

Our NGO «MultiKultiUA» together with the Kharkiv Literary Museum, Gwara Media, garage hub and Rotaract «Kharkiv First Capital» organised this unique exhibition.

The exhibition presents three-dimensional models, exact copies of famous architectural structures from around the world. Everybody had a unique opportunity to explore these models with their hands, alongside some information about each architectural sight. Additionally, visitors could experience the aromas and hear the music related to a particular culture.

Most copies of architectural monuments are printed on a 3D printer with high quality and these reproduce most accurately the surface features of the original buildings. It targets 3 senses available to the blind, and all comers not only become familiar with some of the many cultural heritages of the world but are also able to experience them in a way possible for for the blind.

The exhibition aroused interest of blind persons. Students of the Kharkiv regional special boarding school for blind children were invited. Korolenko Kharkiv public and members of Blind Lawyers thanked the organisers for the opportunity to experience different cultures and remove their doubts. As this project shows, a lot of blind persons have a wrong impression of the architectural buildings.

Interestingly, this exhibition also allowed those who can see to become more aware of what it means to be blind and feel their problem. For this, sleeping masks were used to extegrate the visual input out so that they were able to explore the tactile exhibition and understand what it is to see everything in black.
